Location
Chicago, Illinois, the Gold Coast
Property
Historic landmark hotel, opened 1920
Scale
535 rooms, including 74 suites
Our focus
Guest room lighting and furnishings
Scope
Lamps and fixtures specified to read as original to the building, warm and classic, not contemporary hotel standard.
Casegoods and soft seating built to the weight and finish a landmark property expects, room after room.
Every piece manufactured to one consistent spec, so hundreds of keys match without drift.
Phased and installed around an operating hotel that never stops, on schedule and to plan.
The brief
The Drake opened on New Year's Eve 1920 at the top of the Magnificent Mile, an Italian Renaissance landmark on Chicago's Gold Coast overlooking Lake Michigan. It is on the National Register of Historic Places, with 535 rooms and nearly a century of pedigree behind it. Work in a building like this is not allowed to look new. It has to look like it was always there.
Our part was the guest rooms. The lighting and furnishings had to feel original to the hotel, hold up to the traffic a property this size carries, and stay consistent from room to room across hundreds of keys. That is manufacturing work, produced to one standard and delivered to spec around a hotel that never closes. It is exactly the kind of project that comes to us.
In a landmark, the best work is the work nobody notices. It just looks like it belongs.
